Umbraco CMS System vs Wordpress
Wednesday, March 25th, 2009It may not suprise most of us wordpress fanatics out there that Wordpress can be manipulated into a CMS system, and a darn good one at that, but there are other options out there and I am here to compare two of my favorites.
We all know, and probably love Wordpress. It is so elegant, so easy to use, so easy to manipulate, and best of all, it is FREE. This is one of the main reasons that Wordpress does so well is that it has saturated the market with a free blog system that is not blogger, however there are a few drawbacks of wordpress. Sure it is awesome with its numerous plugins and its great template structure, but its php core can leave it open to attacks. I do not want to get into wordpress exploits as that is not my intention, it just needs to be known that wordpress does have some minor security holes. For the average website or blog, this is no big deal, but to a corporation this could be deadly.
Another downfall to Wordpress is that it is definately a CMS/Blogging platform that is based around the ease of a novice, and it takes away much of the programming from people like myself. With its install in 5 seconds and start writing your content, it takes away from the experience of actual code development.
On the other end of the spectrum, there is the counter oposite of Wordpress, Umbraco. Freely downloadable at http://www.umbraco.org, umbraco is an ASP .NET based Content Management System with a blog add on. Right away we can tell that umbraco is more for the developer than the novice as it is a CMS system first, blog second.

Now sure umbraco does not have the following that Wordpress has, nor does it have pretty templates and thousands of plugins that can do virtually anything, but it does have an amazing core and a great forum for anyone with any issues.
The best thing about umbraco is that it is completely development driven, it gives the developer full range of what content types should be accessible for what pages and gives the developer full range over XSLT code to run everything.
Now with the comparisons it is easy to see that Wordpress is clearly the winner for those that want to have an easy to install blog, and Umbraco is for those who want an all you can handle in your face CMS system. I highly recommend both, for different types of people. If you are a developer that is getting tired of the "ease" of wordpress I highly recommend you try out umbraco, and vice versa. You can not go wrong with either one!

Granted – Wordpress is still mainly a blogging system. Umbraco is a GREAT .NET CMS – the best I have seen! But keep in mind as you said – Wordpress would suit those who are technology illerate. While Umbraco would be for the geeks like us!
Umbraco is fantastic from a development point of view but also from a user point of view. Content editing and manipulation is simple. Our users love it. If you only want a blog I would install wordpress.
For someone who just love writing, wordpress gives him what he wants. A writer will never spend his time to developing the site. That is for those who love to tinker around.

Wordpress is blog oriented while Umbraco is a CMS
I’m not sure if a blog engine can be compared with a cms
Yes, a blog engine manages content but it’s like making a comparisson between an SUV and a truck, both are able to transport stuff but your SUV won’t make it if your stuff is a sea-boat.
