Intel atom processors in netbooks

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Intel have just recently launched what they call there smallest ever chip. They introduced it to the market and they have said its there smallest ever chip which is actually built with the world's smallest transistors and the new Intel processor was actually designed from the ground up.

Smallest processors in the world- Intel atom

"This is our smallest processor built with the world's smallest transistors. The Intel Atom processor is based on an entirely new design, built for low power and designed specifically for a new wave of Mobile Internet Devices and simple, low-cost PC's. This small wonder is a fundamental new shift in design, small yet powerful enough to enable a big Internet experience on these new devices. We believe it will unleash new innovation across the industry."

Intel Executive Vice President Sean Maloney said on the launch of the new CPU which is aimed at mobile devices and a new wave of micro laptops called net/web books or microbooks.

Its actually based on an entirely new micro architecture, the Intel Atom processor was developed specifically for targeted performance and low power while maintaining full Intel 'Core' micro architecture instruction set compatibility. Intel Atom processors also feature multiple threads for better performance and increased system responsiveness.

We already know that Intel lead the CPU market at the moment and this is just another step further in taking on there rivals such as AMD. As the technology industry goes more mobile than ever before Intel make sure they are at the forefront of technology yet again by providing affordable, micro CPU's to the market to power the new wave of digital technology products.

The features and benefits of an Intel Atom include:

All Intel® Atom™ processors feature:
Small Form Factor CPU Package
Low TDP
Power Optimized Front Side Bus
Enhanced Data Prefetcher & Enhanced Register Access Manager

Which for a micro CPU like the Intel Atom is fantastic.

The new lead-free², halogen-free³ Micro-Flip Chip package is actually 60% smaller in netbooks (22x22 mm) than a notebook CPU (35x35 mm), which actually saves system board real estate in a much thinner and smaller industrial design, enabling small netbook form factors.

Netbooks and webbooks need to be small, that's the whole point of them.

Netbooks usually run on either Windows XP Home edition or Linux ,usually Linux Ubuntu. They do not usually run XP Professional, Vista, or OS X. Microsoft arbitrarily restricts Netbooks from running the Professional Edition of Windows XP. Likewise, Apple arbitrarily restricts OS X to Apple hardware and it has never played in the low-end realm that Netbooks occupy. Vista usually requires too much horsepower to run well on a Netbook. HP has been the only company to offer Vista on a Netbook. The price of the netbook was quite high that it's debatable whether such a machine qualifies as a Netbook. Netbooks are a small, affordable portable computer which usually cost around $400. They should only really be used for surfing the web and using applications on the move e.g MS Office etc..
